The word Gospel means good news. Good news about what? This is the good news about how God redeems people. You see, the Bible, in the first verses, tell us that God created the world and everything in it, including men and women, perfectly. God created mankind and they shared perfect fellowship, walking together in the garden. It wasn't long, however, until these two creations of God chose to want their own way above God's way. They chose to rebel against God and so they were cursed. They could no longer have fellowship with God. and they would eventually die.
However, because God is full of mercy and compassion, He chose to provide a way for us to be redeemed. He promised that one day someone would come to restore that perfect fellowship between God and His creation. You see, the problem is that because of the rebellion and sin of our first parents, all humans are stained with sin. Romans 3:23 says that all humans have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. Ephesians 2 tells us that apart from God's intervention on our behalf, we are lost, dead, hopeless and helpless. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of our sins is death. So where is the good news in all of this? The good news is that Jesus Christ, God Himself, stepped into our world and after living for thirty-three years, he offered himself up to death on our behalf. II Corinthians 5:21 says that Jesus, who did not know sin, literally became the physical embodiment of sin for us. He did so that we could be made righteous. You see, the only hope we have is that God would step in on our behalf to save us. We cannot save ourselves. In Isaiah 63:6, we are told that all of our righteous acts, everything that we could do that we would call good works, things to make us appealing to God, are nothing but filthy rags, worth nothing but being thrown away. We cannot do good works in the hope that our good works will outweigh our bad ones in the end, because stacked up against the holiness of God, even if we sinned only once in our lives, would condemn us.It is like a man hanging off a cliff by a chain and it breaks. It doesn't matter if one link breaks, or if all of them do, the man will still die. In Romans 5:8, we learn that when we were at our worst and weakest, while we were in the act of sin, God died for us, the ungodly. Ephesians 2:8-9 tell us that our salvation is a free gift of God through faith and it isn't because of our works, because then we could have something to brag about.
So what can we do?
In Acts 16:31, we are told that the only thing we can do is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, trust that He came to earth, died and rose again for you, bearing your sins away and you will be saved. It is as simple as that. Simply believe. It doesn't matter who you are or what you have done. It doesn't matter your age, race, gender, or anything else. Simply believe and you will be saved. I trust that you will choose to call on Christ, to give up on trying to earn God's favor and simply trust. If you have questions, we welcome you to come and ask us.
